TNTEditorial Help Files (version 1.8)

What is TNTEditorial?

TNTEditorial® is a set of custom editing and publishing tools--designed by publishing and typesetting experts--that work within the familiar Microsoft Word interface.

Because Word is designed primarily for the creation of documents by home and business users, many of its features can be a hindrance to publishing professionals using it to edit documents or prepare them for typesetting. TNTEdit tames Word's annoying habits, returning control of formatting to the editor or typesetter and making its genuinely helpful features more accessible. TNTEdit customizes the basic Word interface and adds helpful and powerful features and utilities for writing, editing, keymarking, and composing manuscripts.

What Can I Do With TNTEditorial?

Designed with the manuscript editing and publishing workflow in mind, TNTEdit offers a host of automated processes, shortcuts, and functions that allow you to take author's files through editing, keymarking, and preparation for typesetting. With TNTEdit you can:

The TNTEditorial Publishing Model

TNTEdit draws on over twenty years' worth of experience with the acquisitions, editorial, design, and typesetting processes. TNTEdit fits well into the publishing model outlined below--realizing many gains in efficiency and productivity. However, TNTEdit is a flexible tool that can be adapted to fit just about any publishing workflow.

Acquisitions

The author delivers electronic files, preferably saved in RTF (Rich Text Format) Most word processors offer .rtf as a "Save As" option on the File menu. These files are accompanied by a complete matching printout of the electronic files, for reference during cleanup and coding.

Preparing Files for Editing

Author files are inserted into new TNTEdit documents. After the author files are in TNTEdit format they are examined for any areas that obviously need cleanup, and recurring errors or typos are fixed. Using the author's printout as a guide, or the file formatting if you do not have a printout, TNTEdit keymarks (style tags) can now be applied to design elements.

Next, AllMacsPrep is run on the file to remove stray fonts, formatting and other "junk" word processors leave in files. Any TNTEdit keymarks applied earlier will be maintained.

Once AllMacsPrep is completed the document is scanned again for elements or special characters that need to be changed or fixed. Then ALLMacs is run on the document to fix or highlight many common formatting and typing errors such as the lower case "l" used for the number "1," hyphens used as EM and EN dashes, extra spaces, etc.

Coding Files for Editing

After running ALLMacs and AllMacsPrep on the files, they are compared with the original printout. Additional keymarking is accomplished using the TNTEdit keymark shortcuts.

Editing

The editor works through the document, using TNTEdit utilities and enhancements of standard Word functions to track changes, insert editor's notes and author queries, place merge codes when needed, insert special characters, and indicate special typographic treatments. At any point, the editor may generate a printout for author review that shows all, some, or none of the tracked changes. The printout also presents queries to the author by several methods. While the document is being edited, elements of the book are added to a sample page file for concurrent or later design work. With the optional TNTBound Galleys® software, bound galleys (book pages made up in a standard design) can be generated at any time during the editorial process.

Final Files for Typesetting

When all edits and revisions are complete, the editor produces clean files and an optional printout. These go to the typesetter as is, or with TNTComp®, an optional add-on to TNTEdit. With TNTComp, final typesetter files can be created for any imposition or desktop publishing software.

* Creating compositor files and bound galleys from TNTEdit requires additional software from Technologies 'N Typography. For more information contact TNT.
